About

Meet John Rizvi, Esq.

I am honored and privileged that you are considering me and my law firm for your patenting matters. This page will tell you all about me and my passion for patent law.

About John

I am BOARD CERTIFIED by the Florida Bar as a SPECIALIST in Intellectual Property Law.

Board Certification is the highest level of recognition of attorneys’ competency and experience in specialized areas of law approved by the Supreme Court of Florida. To qualify as a Board Certified Patent Attorney, I had to have years of focused practice as a patent attorney, successfully pass a separate examination exclusively on intellectual property law, and undergo substantial peer review scrutiny proving my credentials as a specialist. Only a tiny handful of patent attorneys in the entire country are Board Certified as specialists. If you were undergoing an important surgery, wouldn’t you want the doctor cutting you open to have proven their knowledge and experience before their peers in the medical profession?

Why Choose Me?

I have been focusing my practice on patent law for the past 18 years — before the Internet developed and before national television shows like American Inventor and The Big Idea made patents a household name. All lawyers will eventually get grey hair (or have no hair) no matter what area of law they practice or how often they bounce around from one practice area to another. The key to excellence in any field is not aging — that happens with time anyway — but specializing. Well, I was a patent attorney years before forming new patent practices became a trend for general practice firms. Patent law is not “just another practice area” for me or my law firm.  It truly is my passion and I offer you 10 additional reasons why I should be your first choice to help you protect and profit from your idea.

How One of My Clients Earned A $100 Million Payout from His Invention

Several years ago a gifted young man, Alexander Gomez, walked into my office, sat down, and passionately told me about his medical idea, more a dream at this point, that had prompted him to drop out of medical school and form his own business.

I listened intently as he described his brief spell as a surgical technician – a position that allowed him to save for medical school –  where he encountered a strange technique: “Surgeons, operating in chilly operating rooms, were performing laparoscopic surgery which caused the camera lens to fog up when it was inserted into the warm body.”

A Must-See TEDx Talk for Inventors

I was honored to have the opportunity recently to deliver a TEDx Talk which outlined valuable lessons for inventors learned during my journey over the past 20 years in the patent law arena.

Many of the themes discussed at the TEdx presentation are featured in my bestselling book entitled, Escaping the Gray: When Launching Your Idea Full Throttle is the Only Option, and which has received numerous accolades from the inventing community.

I perfected my craft at one of the most prestigious and revered patent law firms in the world – a firm that counts Bell, Edison, the Wright Brothers and Ford among its distinguished list of famous inventor clients. But instead of working directly with inventors I spent most of my time in corporate meetings.

This was the impetus to start my own law firm which is dedicated to helping inventors and entrepreneurs, just like you, protect their ideas and profit from them. The TEDx platform is designed to unleash fresh ideas from local communities and I was privileged to be able to share mine on that creative stage.

Hear It Straight from the Shark's Mouth

Kevin Harrington, one of the original “sharks” on the TV show, Shark Tank, and the inventor of the infomercial, had this to say about me:

“I know a thing or two about successfully launching new products.  And over the years, I’ve worked with a lot of patent attorneys. Most of them speak in legalese and, quite frankly, are hard to understand and have no practical sense for business.  John Rizvi is different.  He is plain spoken and down to earth.  Not only does he know patent law, but as an Adjunct Professor he has perfected the art of teaching it to law students and other attorneys for almost 20 years.

He has a knack for explaining difficult legal concepts in plain English. In fact, that is why I asked John to write the chapter on patents in my new book.  John is the real deal.”

My Best Selling Books for Inventors

Over the last two decades I have meet some incredibly talented entrepreneurs and inventors who have not only changed the world but have also inspired me to become a better patent attorney.    From the moment I decided to enter patent law I always wanted to work with small inventors with big ideas and the passion to pursue them.  My two recent books, Think and Grow For Inventors and Escaping the Gray: When Launching your Idea Full Throttle is the Only Option, are my attempt to capture some of these amazing moments in my career and highlight ordinary people who have risen to lofty heights with their inventions.

My struggle to start my own patent law practice reflects many of the same challenges and dark moments that inventors like yourself will face as you begin your journey to make your idea a reality. But in the end, the struggle is always worth it and today I am living my dream. I hope these books show you that no dream is too big to pursue or any idea too complex solve.
